Local Career Coach Shares in an Arizona Republic Article That “Elevator Speeches” Are Key in Landing Dream Jobs.

Kevin Tucker offers guidance for preparing an effective 30-second “elevator speech.”

PHOENIX, AZ October 11, 2005 -- Kevin Tucker, Managing Director of C~Cubed Career Consulting & Coaching, in Gilbert was recently highlighted in an article written by Claire Bush. Bush is the featured writer for the Arizona Republic’s CareerBuilder® section. The article on 30-second “elevator speeches” featuring Tucker, appeared in the Sunday, October 9, 2005 issue.

Sometimes you only have 30-seconds, about the length of a short elevator ride, to make a fantastic first impression. Could you sum up your skills, abilities, and past experiences in that short time frame? Kevin Tucker offered readers tips on making the most out of that all important introduction.

“As a job seeker, it’s important to keep in mind how you can help an organization, not how an organization can help you,” Kevin reminds. “Shift the focus from ‘What can you do for me?’ to ‘What can I do for you and your company?’ and watch the doors of opportunity open,” he said. In order to make your introduction memorable, Kevin recommends painting an interesting word picture to make your skills, abilities, and past experiences come alive. “When people meet, often the first question is, ‘What do you do?’ Instead of answering with a standard response such as, ‘I’m a telephone repair person’, give it a new twist,” he suggested. “Reply, I work with small businesses that are grappling with telephone problems.’”

Kevin also recognizes that speaking skills may not come naturally, but they can be learned. “Try practicing your speech in front of a mirror at first, then after you’re comfortable, for friends or your spouse. They’ll let you know your strong points, as well as what you need to work on.”

Additionally, Kevin is a member of the “Ask the Experts” panel which is a weekly question and answer column that poses employment related questions to industry experts and offers advancement strategies to the paper’s readers.

CareerBuilder® in the Arizona Republic is a weekly section offering a broad scope of career and employment related information.

Kevin worked as a Hiring Manager with several Fortune 500 companies prior to founding C~Cubed.
